The second key component to achieving success in life is mastering the ability to FORGET. It sounds silly, but I have seen it derail many talented and dedicated people in the past. You may be asking yourself: ” Forget what??” It might be failures in business. Or negative relationships with friends, family and colleagues. Or health issues. I have found that the song, “She’ll be coming around the mountain when she comes” so depicts how most people continue to deal with issues in their lives over and over again, sometimes for years or forever, unless they are able to erase (forget) from their self image, those very events that have created the stumbling block to their success. You must displace that negative image or experience with something new and positive that, if ruminated on, will push out and eradicate the component of failure in your life.
When I worked for Mary Kay Inc., I had the privilege of getting to know a top level sales director named Gloria Mayfield Banks. One of the many things that so impressed me about Gloria was her training class on how she created a positive self image; eradicating the old thoughts that used to paralyze her from moving forward. She created a self talk script of whom she is and where she was going that served to remove from her thought life images of past handicaps or failures that only served to hinder her achievement. Once she memorized and mastered her script and spoke it out 20-30 times every day for at least a month, she found she was no longer encumbered by thoughts of failure and moved on to achieve phenomenal accomplishments. Remember, without displacement, there can be no long term success. Although you may achieve some success, in the long run, your old thought patterns will come back to bite you and drag you back down into the muck and the mire that most people call life.
